Isn't it romantic? Not when we're talking about Roy Moore

Ah, romance. The single yellow rose, the voyage-a-deux to France, a moonlit dinner on the beach. I love romance, you love romance, movies and songs would barely exist without its dreamy glow. Whatever you call Roy Moore’s alleged behavior toward teenage girls, it is not romantic. And yet in the...

When will all this talk about sexual harassment end?

When will this all end? I mean the daily public revelations of sexual harassment, the landslide of me too’s, the nonstop media reports, the anger and confusion all of it has unleashed. When will it stop? A lot of people are wondering and the answer is easy: Not yet. It’s been five weeks since the...

    Pipe down, leaf blowers

The autumn leaves drift by my window, the autumn leaves of red and gold. And you know what that means. THE LEAF-BLOWING MANIACS ARE ON THE LOOSE AGAIN. You know who they are, these wand-waving fanatics with their screaming metal machines who prowl the yards and sidewalks where human beings try...

Are we teaching survival — or paranoia — as mass shootings continue?

I was reading a story Tuesday on how to protect yourself during a mass shooting when I had a vision of the civil defense drills of my childhood. Where were you on the night Donald Trump was elected president? It was a Tuesday, almost exactly a year ago. Remember? Yes, you do. I’m guessing that the memory of that night is seared into the brains of most American adults, however they voted, but even if I didn’t remember it, I have the texts...

At 80, CHA's oldest employee says, 'Auf Wiedersehen!'

In the final hour of his final day at the Chicago Housing Authority, Homer Gary, the agency’s oldest employee, grabbed a few last items from his cubicle. He chose selectively. Scotch tape? Nope. Kleenex? Sure. The nearly empty bottle of Givenchy Gentleman cologne, which contributed to his reputation...

Mueller and Corker and the art of illusion — a new TrumPoem

For over a year, I've been chronicling the rise and rule of Donald Trump in rhyme. Here are a few more verses, based, as always, on real events and his real comments. Haunted House This White House is hauntedBy vampires and ghoulsBy ghosts of ObamaBy goblins and fools. I hide in my chambers(The...

Come fa la la with us at Songs of Good Cheer

Is there a holiday song that drives you nuts? Or one you dearly love? Your passion, for or against, could win you two tickets to this year’s Songs of Good Cheer, the annual holiday singalong my colleague Eric Zorn and I host at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. Nineteen years ago, when Eric...
