Four-star cornerback Houston Griffith commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame added a big piece to its 2018 recruiting class Tuesday evening when four-star defensive back Houston Griffith announced his commitment on his Twitter account.

Griffith, the son of former Illinois running back Howard Griffith, played at Mount Carmel before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., before his junior year. The 6-foot-1, 192-pounder decommitted from Florida State last month.

He’s the highest-rated prospect in Notre Dame’s class at No. 63 in the nation and No. 11 among cornerbacks, according to’s composite rankings. Recruiting analysts project Griffith could play cornerback or safety in college.

College football’s first early signing period is Dec. 20-22. Notre Dame’s class has a current composite ranking of sixth in the country.

Griffith’s IMG teammate Verdis Brown — a four-star offensive lineman who also transferred there from Mount Carmel and who also decommitted from Florida State last month — is expected by most analysts to commit to Illinois.
